Atheist is a death metal band from Sarasota, Florida. Formed in 1984 by singer/guitarist Kelly Shaefer and drummer Steve Flynn, the band quickly made a name for themselves with their complex and technical musical prowess that blended elements of death metal, jazz and progressive rock.
Their debut album ‘Piece of Time’ from 1991 is widely regarded as a classic of the genre, on which the band demonstrates their virtuoso playing and complex song structures. Atheist continued to push the boundaries of death metal with their subsequent albums ‘Unquestionable Presence’ (1991) and ‘Elements’ (1993), both of which received critical acclaim.
Although the band went their separate ways in 1994, Atheist’s legacy as innovators of technical death metal has continued to inspire generations of musicians. The band reunited in 2006 for a series of concerts and released their fourth album ‘Jupiter’ in 2010.
Today, Atheist remain an influential and highly respected band in the death metal community, known for their unique blend of extreme technical proficiency and progressive musicality. Their once out-of-print classic albums are now available with revised packaging and liner notes from the band.
